US doctor Kent Brantly who survived Ebola speaks, leaves hospital

Dr. Kent Brantly, the US doctor cured of Ebola left the Emory University Hospital Atlanta about an hour ago. Before leaving, he spoke at a news conference, telling reporters that he's thrilled to be alive

"Today is a miraculous day. I’m thrilled to be alive, to be well and to be reunited with my family.

"I cannot thank you enough for your prayers and your support, but what I can tell you is that I serve a God who answers prayers. God saved my life, a direct answer to thousands and thousands of prayers. Thank you to the Liberia community, Emory hospital and so many of you, my family, friends and church family. Please don’t stop praying for others in West Africa.”

“I will be going away to recover physically and emotionally, but for now, we need some time together in private before sharing more of our journey." He said

Boko Haram takes over Police Academy in Borno state

Boko Haram men today August 21st reportedly invaded the Liman Kara Police college, a riot police training academy in Gwoza, Borno state and took over the academy.
According to BBC, the sect men arrived the town in armored cars and dozens of motorcycles. Scores of trainees at the academy have been reported killed while many managed to escape to nearby mountains for safety. More details later

Jilted lover walks in front of train driven by girlfriend who left him 3 weeks ago

A jilted lover killed himself by standing in front of a train driven by his ex-girlfriend, it emerged last night. Gary Wells, 36 (left), was said to be distraught after splitting from Diane MacDonald, 29 (right), three weeks ago. Miss MacDonald was powerless to prevent a collision after he stepped on to the track in front of the train she was driving on one of Britain’s most scenic rail routes.

Mr Wells died instantly as he was hit by the train.

Miss MacDonald, the first woman train driver on the West Highland Line in Scotland, was left so distressed that she required sedation after the tragedy, which happened at Inverlochy, near Fort William, on Tuesday morning.

The Chairman of Heirs Holdings and former MD of UBA bank, Mr Tony Elumelu has donated N50m to support the Federal Government's effort to contain the Ebola virus in Nigeria.

Dan Nwomeh, the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Health Prof Onyebuchi Chukwu announced this today on social media.

The management of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria also donated an ambulance to the Ebola Emergency Operation Centre in Lagos .

ACP Frank Mba bows out as Police Public Relations Officer

ACP Frank Mba has bowed out as the Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Police Force. In a letter of appreciation he sent out this morning, Mr  Mba expressed his gratitude to the media and the Nigerian people for contributing to his successful tenure.

Mba, who was promoted to the rank of Assistant Police Commissioner in June, has been redeployed to Lagos State Command as an Area Commander, Area J. He is expected to hand over to the new Public Relations officer, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu later today.

Justice Oluwafunmilayo Olajumoke Atilade (pictured centre), the younger sister of the immediate past Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayotunde Philips (left) who retired in July, was sworn in as the new Chief Judge of Lagos state by Gov Babatunde Fashola at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Lagos state Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

This is the first time in the history of the state judiciary siblings will succeed each other as Chief Judge of the state.

Ebola: Lagos records five new suspected cases

The Lagos State government has announced that five new suspected cases of Ebola virus have been recorded at the Yaba Isolation Centre. The state Commissioner for health, Dr Jide Idris made this known yesterday while addressing journalists. Dr Idris said that two of the five new cases were from secondary contacts and that 213 people are now being observed

"Till date, we have recorded eight suspected cases, five of which came in yesterday August 19th, 12 confirmed. On the whole, five have died (including the index case). We are currently following up 213 contacts, and 62 have completed the two-day follow-up,” Dr Jide said

Dr. Idris used the opportunity to pay tribute to late Dr Ameyo Adadevoh and other health workers who have so far died from the Ebola virus disease.

Ebola: Fiancé of late nurse, Obi Ejelonu, admitted to hospital with suspected case

According to Sahara Reporters, the fiancé of Justina Obi Ejelonu, the nurse who died of the Ebola virus after being infected by Patrick Sawyer, is suspected to have contracted the Ebola virus from his late fiance.

The suspected patient, whose name was given simply as "Dennis", allegedly suffered from a high fever three days ago but said he had recovered, SR reports. He's since been admitted in the hospital. A new blood test has been ordered, with results expected soon.

US doctor with Ebola virus to be released from hospital today

Dr Kent Brantly, the American doctor who contracted the deadly Ebola virus in Liberia while working as a missionary in the country will be released from Atlanta's Emory University Hospital today August 21st after being successfully treated.

According to the spokesperson of the hospital, Vince Dollard, Dr. Kent's blood samples came back negative for the virus after undergoing proper screening for two days. Dr. Kent is expected to give a statement regarding his discharge later today at a news conference before leaving the hospital.
Dr. Kent and another US missionary Nancy Writebol contracted the disease while working to fight the outbreak in Liberia. After they contracted the disease they were taken to an isolation unit at Emory University Hospital, where they were treated with the experimental drug, ZMapp.

There’s a statue in Yaba, Lagos, of a man, whom many in Nigeria have forgotten. His family never have. And now, we all have a chance to remember him, and in a way, to honour him. He is the man on our one Naira coin.

Herbert Olayinka Samuel Heelas Badmus Macaulay, had a daughter, Sarah Idowu Abigail, who would get married and give birth to a son, Babatunde Kwaku Adadevoh. Babatunde would grow up to become a doctor, and have kids of his own. One of these children, Stella Ameyo, became, like her father, a doctor.

She would go on to work at a hospital in Obalende, Lagos, First Consultant Hospital, not very far from where her famous ancestor was once imprisoned by the British.
