Photos: Muslim funeral service begins for legendary boxer Muhammad Ali

Two days of funeral ceremonies bidding farewell to Muhammad Ali began today with a Muslim prayer service in the Kentucky hometown of the beloved legendary boxer and civil rights hero.

Pres. Buhari appoints Ben Akabueze as DG Budget office

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of his Special Adviser on Planning, Mr Ben Akabueze as the new Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation. Mr. Akabueze takes over from Mr Tijani Mohammed Abdullahi who will now serve as Special Adviser to the President on Planning and will continue to work with the Minister of Budget and National Planning.

Akabueze was one-time Lagos state commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget. Akabueze and Abdullahi joined the Ministry of Budget and National Planning in February this year.

Another militant group, Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta emerges, demands allocation of 60% oil blocs to Niger Deltans

A new militant group, the Ultimate Warriors of Niger Delta have surfaced, with a demand that the Federal government allocate 60% of the nation's oil blocs to indigenes of the Niger Delta region.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Brig. Sibiri Taiowoh and made available to newsmen yesterday June 8th, the group said failure to meet their demands within 2 weeks will see continuous attack of oil installations in the Niger Delta region.

Bill to reduce age qualification of political candidates to 30yrs passes 2nd reading in House of Reps

The second reading of a Bill by the House of Representatives seeking to reduce the age qualifications for interested candidates to contest for the positions of President, governor and senator in the country to 30 years, passed second reading yesterday June 8th.

The bill also seeks to reduce the age qualifications to contest for the House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly to 25 years.

Doctors suspend planned strike action

The National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) have postponed their strike action scheduled to commence today June 9th, by one week, after a meeting with the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, at the National Assembly yesterday June 8th. At the meeting, Dogara asked for a one week postponement so him and members of the House committee on Health can meet with the Minister of Health to fashion out ways of meeting the demands of the doctors.

Federal Government to begin recruitment of 500,000 unemployed graduates next week

The Federal Government today ‎announced it will commence the recruitment of 500,000 unemployed graduates to benefit from the N500 billion social investment Programme included in the 2016 Budget. The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo , Laolu Akande today June 8th.

According to the statement, application will be received as Sunday June 12th ‎as the portal would formally be launched on Saturday, June 11.

Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, mourns Stephen Keshi

Governor of Delta state, Ifeanyi Okowa, has released a statement mourning Stephen Keshi who died in the early hours of today June 8th. Keshi is from Delta state. Read Governor Okowa's statement below
"On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I commiserate with the family of the late Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, and the entire football loving fans in Nigeria over the demise of the late Super Eagles former Captain and Coach. The remarkable achievements recorded by the Nigeria Super Eagles in 1994 and 2013 were unarguably due to his indefatigable role as the Captain and Coach of the Super Eagles in those glorious years culminating in the winning of the African Nations Cup.

EFCC quizzes former Governor of Enugu State Sullivan Chime over N450m presidential campaign funds

Stephen Keshi's corpse deposited at Benin mortuary

The remains of former Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has been deposited at Faith Mediplex, a privately owned mortuary facility in Benin City, Edo state. Keshi died of Cardiac arrest at his home in Benin City in the early hours of today June 8th. His death comes six months after his wife of 33 years, Nkem Kate Keshi, died in December after a prolonged battle with cancer.

According to his family, he died in the early hours of today Wednesday June 8th of Cardiac arrest in Benin, Edo state. He was just 54 years old. He wasn't even ill, he just suddenly died. His family has announced his death.

Indian politician asks his government to ban Nigerians from entering India, says Nigerians create problems everywhere

A former Minister in India, Ravi Naik, has asked the Indian Central government to "ban" Nigerians from entering India, saying his country does not need Nigerian tourists. According to Times of India, Naik said this while speaking to some reporters recently.

Referring to Nigerians as "Negroes", Naik who is also a senior Congress leader, told the reporters that Nigerians have been causing "problems" in Goa, a western state in India as well other places.

President Buhari has handed over power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajoi. Osinbajo will serve in acting capacity for the 10 days President Buhari will be away in the UK for medical checkup.
President Buhari's letter to the senate was read on the floor of the house by the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, during plenary yesterday June 7th. This is the second time President Buhari is transferring power to Osinbajo since they both came into power in May 2015.

Doctors to begin nationwide strike tomorrow

Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) has said that they will be going on a nationwide strike starting from Thursday June 9th. President of the association, Muhammad Askira, announced this yesterday June 7th. According to him, they are taking the painful decision of embarking on the strike action following the failure of the federal government to meet its demands of better working condition and better remuneration.

MEND commends President Buhari for the clean-up exercise of Ogoniland, describs Jonathan as a colossal failure

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has released a statement commending President Buhari for flagging off the cleanup process of the oil polluted Ogoni land. In the statement made available to Sahara Reporters today June 7th, the militant group said successive governments including that of an indigene of the area, Goodluck Jonathan, failed to carry out the cleanup of the region as recommended in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
