Lauryn Hill has 2 weeks to pay half a million dollars or go to prison

Singer Lauryn Hill was scheduled to be sentenced yesterday Monday April 22nd after pleading guilty on tax evasion charges for failing to report $1.8 million in income. At her sentencing yesterday, the mother of 6 was given two weeks to come up with $504,000 or face up to two and a half years in prison. She has up until May 6 to produce the money.

Across Italy, Nigerian women are forced into the sex trade, essentially kept as slaves who are bought and sold and moved according to a moribund supply and demand. Some of the prostitutes are young girls, just 13 or 14 years old. Others are in their 20s or 30s. Many have children. Some are still married to men in Nigeria. They usually sit on white plastic chairs under umbrellas to protect them from the rain in the winter and the harsh sun in the summer. 

The highest concentration of Nigerian forced sex workers is in and around Naples, but they are not limited to the southern reaches. On Thursday, in the central region of Abruzzo, four Nigerian gang members and an Italian taxi driver who allegedly procured prostitutes across the country were sentenced to between nine and 15 years in prison for making 23-year-old Nigerian Lilian Solomon prostitute herself even though she was in the late stages of lymphoma cancer.

More than 30 houses, shops razed in Ibadan petroleum tanker accident

The sad incident occurred yesterday afternoon Monday April 22nd in the Omitowoju area of Ibadan, in Oyo State. The fire started after a fully loaded petroleum tanker passing through a residential area fell off the road and spilled its 33, 000 litres of petrol.

Over 30 houses and and at least 30 shops in the area were burnt to ashes. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) eventually put out the fire but couldn't say for sure if anyone was killed by the fire.

Man Utd are Champions. Won a record-breaking 20th league title

Robin van Persie scored a first-half hat-trick as Manchester United won a record-breaking 20th league title in style with a commanding 3-0 win over Aston Villa in a match played this evening.

The Dutchman slotted home from two yards inside two minutes before latching on to Wayne Rooney's 50-yard pass to score one of the goals of the season with a stunning volley from outside the area. The hat-trick was completed after just 33 minutes with a neat finish from six yards after more fine work from Ryan Giggs. Jonny Evans and Phil Jones were preferred in central defence, while Giggs partnered Michael Carrick in the center of the pitch in just two changes from the side who drew 2-2 with West Ham.

25-year old graduate stabs himself to death

Residents of Wole Madariola Street, Aguda, Surulere, Lagos have been asking questions about what pushed Chidike Oyeka, a graduate of Madonna University, Anambra, to stab himself repeatedly thereby taking his own life.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the Chidike on April 19, 2013, took a kitchen knife and stabbed himself repeatedly until his intestines were disembowelled.
Our correspondent, who visited his parents’ home where the incident occurred, learnt that the victim recently concluded his National Youth Service Corps programme.
A relative, who wished to remain anonymous, said the 25-year-old had been depressed for some time.

185 killed, 2000 houses razed in Borno town as soldiers & boko haram clash

At least 185 persons including women and children were reported to have been killed by either gunshots or fire after suspected Boko Haram gunmen engaged soldiers of the Joint Task Force in a deadly shootout that left the commercial border town of Baga in Borno State completely burnt down.

Local government officials, who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES, said 185 persons died, at least 2000 houses, 64 motorcycles and 40 cars were burnt in the wake of the attack.

The Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, visited the town on Sunday and was told by residents that soldiers were responsible for the torching of houses that led to the death of many.
