Police prevent governor Amaechi from entering government house

Another crisis is brewing in Rivers State. Yesterday evening, the convoy of the governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi was prevented from using one of the two entrances to the Government House in Port Harcourt by a team of police. The governor's convoy was stopped by four truck loads of policemen as it made its way through the private gate of the governor's official residence. The policemen, led by several senior officers, claimed they were acting on orders from above.

After about 45 minutes of arguing, which included Governor Amaechi himself coming down from his car to speak with the policemen, the governor's convoy had not choice but to leave and take another road to access the main entrance into the Government House. More photos after the cut...

FG denies ordering customized gold iPhones, issues statement

The Federal Government has reacted to the news that they ordered 53 gold gold-plated iPhone 5S for N682million. The report went viral after the CEO of Gold and Co., UK, Amjad Ali, told UK newspaper, The Independent, that our government ordered these phones from his firm as part of the memorabilia for the nation’s 53rd Independence anniversary on October 1, 2013. We consider the reports in a section of the media claiming that the Nigerian government had ordered customized gold iPhones from a Dubai-based company to mark the country’s 53rd independence anniversary in October not only false and misleading, but utterly mischievous.

It is instructive that despite the refutation of the story by the company, which ought to have laid the mischief to rest, a number of politically-minded news media continue to insist on promoting the blatant falsehood. We deplore their antics as yet another attempt to use any trick or means possible to discredit President Jonathan’s well-meaning, hardworking and focused administration.

The company, Gold and Co., has since explained that what was written on Independent was different from what the CEO actually said. They explained that the phones were not ordered by the government but by a Nigerian who asked them to put the crest of the Nigerian govt on the back.

28 year old woman uses fake baby bump to smuggle 2 kilos of cocaine

According reports by AFP, a Toronto woman who used a fake baby bump to try to smuggle two kilograms of cocaine was arrested yesterday September 11th at Bogota airport by Colombian police.

28-year-old Tabitha Leah Ritchie, identified as a social worker, was stopped while trying to board an Air Canada flight in Bogota, Colombia after an inspector noticed that her belly was unusually cold and hard. Airport security discovered a false belly made of latex taped to her body and they found 2 kilograms of cocaine. Record shows that Ms Richie arrived in Colombia on Aug. 6.

Arik stowaway boy gets scholarship from Edo State Governor

I'm sure by now you all remember who Daniel Oikhena is. (Refresh your memory HERE). Daniel and the the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, George Uriesi (pictured right) paid a courtesy visit to Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole yesterday Wednesday Sept. 11th.

Governor Oshiomhole said the government will support Daniel by sending him to one of the top schools in the state. He said:

“Without meaning to encourage anyone else, we decided to support him by sending him to one of the top secondary schools in Edo State that is owned by the Government. The reason for opting for a boarding school is that we think that there is need to closely watch him which his parents could not do. He is an intelligent young man with uncommon challenges, but one that has a vision. We had him examined by people who should know and the result confirmed that he is normal"

Pres. Jonathan honours Nigerian athlete, Blessing Okagbare

President Jonathan yesterday September 11th honoured Africa's fastest woman, Blessing Okagbare. The Olympic and world Athletics Championship medalist was rewarded for her impressive performance at the recently concluded 2013 World Athletic Championship in Moscow. Blessing won the silver medal in the long jump and also placed third in the Women’s 200m race.

President Jonathan said Blessing, who is Africa's 100m record holder, and her coach would be considered for national honours and announced a cash gift of N3 million for her and N3.5million for her coach.

Lawyer and activist Mike Ozekhome released

Almost three weeks after he was kidnapped, human rights lawyer and activist Mike Ozekhome (SAN) has reportedly been released. He was freed at about 8am this morning by his kidnappers in Benin. Mr Ozekhome is said to be in the office of the State Security Service in Benin as of this morning.

Female armed robbery leader and her gang members arrested in Lagos

You know what they say, what a man can do, a woman can do better. Chioma Ezekwesiri (pictured above alone and with members of her gang) is the leader of a robbery gang that was arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in Lagos last week. Chioma and her gang were arrested while attempting to rob a man staying a Bolatito Hotel, Kola Bus Stop, Ijaiye, Lagos.

The robbers were caught after hotel staff called the police when the robbers stormed the hotel looking for their target. The police found two guns and 12 live ammunition in Chioma's car and promptly arrested her and her gang. She later told the police the guns were for an operation over a land matter.

The 35 year old gang leader said she is a Law graduate from the University of Lagos, where she supposedly graduated in 1999 and called to bar in 2000. A claim that has been found to be untrue. Chioma is currently locked up at Kirikiri while awaiting trial...

Other members of Chioma's gang include: Raymond Chukwuka, 24, Ignatius Okeredi, 27,  Michael Madu, 52, Okechukwu Jerome, 28, and Amadi Igwe, 41.

Newly married entertainer turned politician, Rotimi Makinde, and his new wife, former Miss Osun state are currently observing their honeymoon at Obudu Cattle Ranch in Cross Rivers State. The couple left their base in Ile Ife Osun State some days after their wedding to Cross River state where they plan to spend at least a month, having the time of their lives at the wondrous hospitality haven.

Hon. Makinde's media personnel, Sanya Ojo, this week reacted to speculations that he took his new bride to Obudu Cattle Ranch instead of the Dubai honeymoon she'd had hoped for because he was bankrupt. Sanya Ojo said:

"Its misinformation and unfortunate for any discerning mind to nurse the insinuation that a trained and successful accountant in the person of Honourable Makinde could in any situation get involved in anything that could lead to financial recklessness. That as a thorough businessman, Honorable Makinde couldn't have in anyway spent beyond his budget or go into borrowing as being peddled by mischievous enemies. Moreover its more expensive to be in Obudu Cattle Ranch than going abroad for such things"

Olu of Warri rescinds decision to renounce Ogiame title

The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwase II, has rescinded his decision to renounce his royal title, Ogiame, as well as abolish some ancient Itshekiri cultural practices. The Itsekiri Monarch bowed to the wishes of his people after days of protests. His people asked him to either rescind his decision or abdicate.

His decision was made public this afternoon Tuesday September 10th at the Kings Palace by one of his High Chiefs, Rita Lori Ogbebor, who read from a statement that was issued by 22 Palace Chiefs.
