Dino Melaye has been released

The police has released Senator Dino Melaye. The embattled senator was arrested this morning at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja when he was about to fly to Morocco for an official assignment.

Confirming his arrest, his spokesperson, Gideon Ayodele, said he had been released after a stand-off that lasted about two and a half hours.

Early this morning, embattled Senator Dino Melaye was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja while heading to Morocco for an official assignment.

Confirming his arrest to NAN, spokesperson of the Nigeria Immigration Service NIS, Sunday James, said the airport authorities acted based on instructions. James however did not reveal who issued the instruction for the arrest.

Diaspora Nigerians wired $22 billion home in 2017, an African record and the fifth largest remittance by immigrants, according to the World Bank. Egypt received $20 billion from its citizens abroad, according to figures published by the bank today. 

The World Bank said payments  from immigrants back to their home countries rebounded to reach a new record in 2017 but the costs of transferring funds also increased.
