Resident doctors give ten day strike notice at UCH, Ibadan

Barely one month after their nationwide strike, the resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, on Friday, gave the hospital management  another 10-day strike notice to protest unpaid salaries. Segun Olaopa, the President of the UCH branch of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), disclosed this development at a news briefing.

Mr. Olaopa said the association’s dialogue with the hospital management on many occasions had yet to yield any positive result.

Iceland President Gudni Johannesson faints, breaks nose in hot bath

Iceland’s President Gudni Johannesson said he fainted and broke his nose while taking a hot bath. But the president of the least populous nation on earth said he is now feeling fine despite that he also hit his forehead during the doomed bath.

“A warm and cosy bath last night turned out to be too hot and cosy,” the 49-year-old academic said in a Facebook post on Thursday.

South Africa's Supreme court of appeal rules that President Jacob Zuma must face corruption charges!

SA Supreme Court of Appeal has ruled that South Africa's President Jacob Zuma must face charges of corruption, fraud, racketeering and money laundering.

It agreed with a lower court ruling last year that prosecutors could bring back 783 counts of corruption relating to a 1999 arms deal. The charges had been set aside eight years ago, enabling Zuma to become president and the president has always maintained his innocence.

President Buhari mourns the death of students who drowned in Kaduna river

President Muhammadu Buhari has mourned the tragic death of some students of Victory College, Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna, who drowned in River Kaduna while on an excursion.

In a statement by Femi Adeshina his Special Adviser on media, 'President Buhari’s thoughts and prayers are with the distraught families of the deceased and the management of the College, and he expresses heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Kaduna State, during this difficult time'.

606 migrants from African rescued by Italian ships

A rescue ship docked in Sicily with 606 migrants picked up in less than two days off the Libyan coast. According to Aid group SOS Méditerranée, the migrants are from over 20 different countries in Africa and the Middle East. They include 241 children and 11 pregnant women.

Many of the women from sub-Saharan Africa said they had suffered sexual abuse. Some of the migrants are malnourished, the group reports.

The Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) has intercepted 27 Toyota Hilux vans suspected to have been smuggled into the country.

The vehicles valued at N432 million, were intercepted along Kubwa expressway in Abuja over non payment of custom duty.

Thugs attack staunch supporter of Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai

A staunch supporter of  Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Alhaji Ado Shaba aka Garkuwan El-Rufai, was attacked by some thugs in the state yesterday October 12th. According to reports, the thugs ambushed the victim while on his way home and attacked him with a machete. He was rushed to the hospital and is currently receiving medical attention.

Farmer sentenced to death by hanging for stealing N170 and Nokia phone in Delta

A 38-year-old farmer, Francis Williams has been sentenced to death by hanging by a Delta State High Court, presided over by Justice A.O. Akpovi for allegedly stealing a Nokia phone valued at N5,000 and a cash sum of one hundred and seventy naira (N170) from his victims.

Justice Akpovi was said to have sentenced Williams to death having found him guilty of the charge of armed robbery punishable under section (1(2)(a) of the robbery and firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap RII Volume 14 Laws of the Federation, 2004.
