Attacks on oil installations: FG, Niger Delta governors evolving common strategy to end economic sabotage

In a meeting summoned on the instruction of President Muhammadu Buhari, the federal government and Niger Delta states have started developing a common and united strategy to deal with the recent resurgent militant attacks on the nation's oil installations.

One of Nigeria's most iconic sports personalities, former Super Eagles captain and former coach of the team, Stephen Keshi, has died. According to his family, he died in the early hours of today Wednesday June 8th of Cardiac arrest in Benin, Edo state. He was just 54 years old. He wasn't even ill, he just suddenly died. His family has announced his death.

Indian politician asks his government to ban Nigerians from entering India, says Nigerians create problems everywhere

A former Minister in India, Ravi Naik, has asked the Indian Central government to "ban" Nigerians from entering India, saying his country does not need Nigerian tourists. According to Times of India, Naik said this while speaking to some reporters recently.

Referring to Nigerians as "Negroes", Naik who is also a senior Congress leader, told the reporters that Nigerians have been causing "problems" in Goa, a western state in India as well other places.

Pres. Buhari hands over to Osinbajo, writes National Assembly informing them of his medical trip to London

President Buhari has handed over power to Vice President Yemi Osinbajoi. Osinbajo will serve in acting capacity for the 10 days President Buhari will be away in the UK for medical checkup.
President Buhari's letter to the senate was read on the floor of the house by the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, during plenary yesterday June 7th. This is the second time President Buhari is transferring power to Osinbajo since they both came into power in May 2015.

Doctors to begin nationwide strike tomorrow

Members of the National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) has said that they will be going on a nationwide strike starting from Thursday June 9th. President of the association, Muhammad Askira, announced this yesterday June 7th. According to him, they are taking the painful decision of embarking on the strike action following the failure of the federal government to meet its demands of better working condition and better remuneration.

Following the news of the retrenchment of 200 staff of Skye bank today, the federal government has released a statement threatening to sanction banks and telecommunication companies, that fail to comply with its order to suspend retrenchment. FG on June 4th, prevailed on Banks and Insurance companies to halt retrenchment exercises for now due to the hard economic realities.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has released a statement commending President Buhari for flagging off the cleanup process of the oil polluted Ogoni land. In the statement made available to Sahara Reporters today June 7th, the militant group said successive governments including that of an indigene of the area, Goodluck Jonathan, failed to carry out the cleanup of the region as recommended in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Members of the PDP National Caretaker Committee today took over the leadership of the party as they replaced the National Working Committee of the party. Former Deputy National Chairman and former Acting National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus on behalf of the National Working Committee, handed over to the caretaker committee members.

Hillary Clinton secures Democratic nomination after delegates count

Hillary Clinton is the presumptive Democratic Party Presidential candidate according to reports by the Associated Press who put together a tally of Democratic Party delegates who voted for Clinton last night. The count puts Mrs Clinton on 2,383 - the number needed to make her the presumptive nominee which makes her the first female nominee for a major US political party.

But her main rival for the party's ticket, Bernie Sanders, says she hasn't won as her candidacy is dependent on super delegates who can't vote till July.

In a bid to quell the unrest in the Niger Delta region by militants in recent times, President Buhari has ordered the military to suspend operations in the region for two weeks to create room for dialogue with militants. Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Ibe Kachikwu, disclosed this at the handover ceremony of Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas to the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, yesterday June 6th.

Lawyers representing former governor of Delta state, James Ibori, have accused Britain's prosecuting authorities of withholding information from them regarding alleged corruption by a British police officer who is involved in Ibori's investigation and also making misleading statements in court.

The lawyers made the allegations at the resumed hearing of the case against Ibori at the Crown Court, Southwark UK yesterday June 6th.

Vice President Osinbajo explains why they didn't release names of looters

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo says the Federal government did not release the names of looters as earlier said because such an action could jeopardize investigations into stolen funds. Skye Bank sacks 200 staff

Skye bank yesterday June 6th, laid off 200 of its staff, disregarding the Federal government directive to all banks to halt all retrenchment exercise. According to the management of the bank, the sacking of 200 of its workers was because the affected staff failed in their 2015 appraisal.

The affected workers got to work yesterday only to be handed their termination of appointment letters and severance packages.
Last week, Ecobank fired 1040 of its staff while Diamond bank sacked 200 members of its staff.

Abidemi Kosoko pays a tribute to her late mum, Henrietta Kosoko

Actress Henrietta Kosoko passed away yesterday morning after a long battle with diabetes. Henrietta, who celebrated her birthday only last week, slumped at her home and was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her daughter Abidemi, shared this touching tribute to her via Instagram today. May her soul rest in peace. Amen.

Media personality, Toke Makinwa has officially filed for divorce from her estranged husband, Maje Ayida, following his well publicized infidelity scandal (read here). In an interview with Bloomberg TV this morning, former President Goodluck Jonathan, said he is aware he is being investigated for corruption in Nigeria. Asked if he was aware that he is being investigated, Jonathan said

Goodluck Jonathan says Nigeria may revisit anti-gay law

Former President Goodluck Jonathan says Nigeria may revisit the anti-gay marriage law which he signed on January 7th 2014. Jonathan said this while speaking at Bloomberg studio today June 6th

“When it comes to equality, we must all have the same rights as Nigerian citizens. The Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force, JNDLF, has threatened to attack many vital government offices including the seat of power, Aso Rock, the headquarters of NNPC in Abuja, National Assembly, the DSS headoffice and others.

In a statement released today June 6th, the militant group which threatened last week, to test 6 missiles in the Niger Delta regions beginning from tomorrow June 7th, warned members of the diplomatic community to remain neutral as they carry out their planned attacks. Part of their statement reads;
