Court remands cultist who allegedly stabbed neighbour to death over a gay man in Lagos state

An Ikeja High Court, Lagos has remanded an alleged member of Aiye Cult group, Adebayo Ahmed in prison custody for allegedly stabbing his neighbour to death over a gay man.

According to reports, 24-year old Ahmed stabbed one Samuel Owawu to death with a broken bottle over a phone belonging to a gay friend of the deceased. Lagos State Prosecuting officer, Monisola Oshibogun said the incident occured on the January 16, 2016 at Oyemekun Bus stop, in Ifako Ijaiye, a suburb of Lagos. 

The deceased and his friend, one Emeka Uche had invited a mutual friend, Francis to their house for a party. When Francis arrived, he immediately started making sexual advances at the deceased who tried to resist him. The deceased raised the alarm and a crowd gathered at the residence and started beating the alleged gay man. It was at this point that Ahmed (the defendant) and some his friends who were all members of the same cult group started demanding for the release of the gay man’s phone.

The deceased objected insisting that the phone which had some videos which showed Francis (the gay man) engaging in sexual acts with other men, would be tendered as evidence to the police. Ahmed engaged the deceased in a fight, and in the process he picked up a broken bottle and allegedly stabbed him in the chest. 

The deceased was rushed to the Ifako Ijaiye General hospital where he later died. Ahmed was apprehended and handed over to the police where he was charged to court on a count of murder, which he pleaded not guilty to. The defendant was not granted bail but was remanded in Ikoyi prisons on the orders of the court 

The presiding Judge, Justice Bisi Akinlade thereafter adjourned the matter till May 30 for trial.
